Recycled Cassette Tape Basket

I’m always on the lookout for new materials to crochet with and like to recycle so this project is a combination of both. Some audio tapes are black and some are brown. I used the brown with brown yarn to make this basket. Video tape is nearly alway black and coupled with black yarn makes a very elegant looking evening clutch purse.

I used the audio tape straight out of the cassette just like a skein of yarn. I made up my basket without a pattern but you can use any basket pattern or make up your own by making a flat circle until the base is as big as you want it. Continue to work with no increases until the basket is as tall as you like. I made this one tall enough to fold back the top to make a cuff.

You can crochet wth the tape alone but be sure to use aluminum hooks because the tape wants to stick a little. Here is a close up of the stitches.

It’s like adding highlights to your hair. A little bling brightens the whole project. Nylon cord from the hardware store works up wonderfully as does household twine. A friend of mine buys sweaters at the thrift store unravels and reuses the yarn. I hope you will look for unusual sources of material to crochet with.

Crochet every single day.
